Placement Tests

For students who have previously taken language classes or have a background in the following East Asian Language: Chinese, Japanese, or Korean ~ a placement test is required before signing up for a language course at UCSB. If you are interested in taking Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language classes at UCSB, the placement test is offered the first couple of days at the start of each quarter.

For those who need to take the Chinese Language Placement, complete the pre-evaluation form and send it to the Chinese language coordinator, Daoxiong Guan at

For those who need to take the Japanese Language Placement, please visit the Japanese Language Program website, complete the information sheet and send it to the Japanese language coordinator, Hiroko Sugawara at date, time and location for these placement tests are regularly updated on the calendar.

Please note that there is a placement test in the beginning of each quarter. Though it is ideal that you take the one in Fall, if you end up missing the evaluation, you will have other opportunities in Winter and Spring.
