“To Write or Not to Write: Japanese Colonial Literature in Taiwan”
ABOUT THE LECTURE
Faye Yuan Kleeman will be presenting the first of her two lectures, “To Write or Not to Write: Japanese Colonial Literature in Taiwan,” which explores the literary and cultural production in Taiwan during the period of Japanese colonial rule (1895 – 1945). The lecture examines the origin, impact, and legacy of this body of literary production with an eye on issues related to cultural interaction between naichi and gaichi (the metropole and the colony), linguistic identity, orientalism and the codification of tropical exoticism, colonial modernity, as well as cultural assimilation and resistance. Dr. Kleeman received her Ph.D. in Japanese Languages and Literature from the University of California at Berkeley and is a Professor of Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
