TOCFL-Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language

The Test of Proficiency-Huayu (TOP) was held at UCSB for the first time on May 8, 2010. Our students were able to establish a standard level of proficiency in Chinese and thus be able to apply to the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship sponsored by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan without having to take the test in L.A. We had five students who took the Beginners and Basic level at UCSB in 2010. We had eight students who took the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) at UCSB in 2011, and three passed at the Intermediate Level. In April of 2012, the Chinese Language Program proved more successful than ever before. We proudly acknowledge that all 19 of our students who took the TOCFL passed. The certification following the passing of this test is important to students who want to work or pursue advanced study in Chinese-language countries, and gives the department documentation in applying for FLAS grants.  This certification also allows students to receive study grants from the Taiwanese government.
