The participants in this year’s Kanchan Kanji Championship joined in on fun games while using their knowledge of kanji characters and compounds to compete with other students of Japanese. There were 4 levels, approximately corresponding to years spent in the Japanese Language Program here at UCSB. Be sure to visit again for information on other upcoming festivities.
The Interdepartmental Ph.D. Emphasis in Environment and Society (IEES) is a new PhD emphasis, launched in 2014, with goal of providing UCSB doctoral students in participating departments an opportunity to receive training and mentorship in interdisciplinary environmental studies and sciences beyond the normal scope of their degree programs.

The Chinese Language Teachers Association of California (CLTAC) is a nonpolitical, nonprofit educational and professional organization. The mission of CLTAC is to promote the study, teaching, and research of the Chinese language and culture on all educational levels; to provide a platform for Chinese instructors to share and exchange teaching experience, ideas and information; to serve as a source for professional development and lifelong teaching; to enhance the quality of Chinese language teaching at all levels; to provide a network of support service to Chinese language teachers; to enhance the awareness of the importance of the Chinese language and culture.
