Lecture by
Professor Cao Jin
School of Journalism, Fudan University
曹晋教授, 复旦大學

This lecture will focus on the provision of HIV/AIDS prevention and care via cyber-space in China, and the grassroots queer (tongzhi) organizations which started to emerge at the beginning of the 21st century in China’s ongoing social transition.  The lecture is based on investigations into queer grassroots organizations in the cities of Tianjin, Kunming, Qingdao, and Chengdu, and will reflect upon the social implications of these alternative organizations and their involvement with a stigmatized and disadvantaged community in China.

CAO Jin is Director of Fudan University’s Center for International Publishing Studies.  She was visiting scholar at Yale University, Harvard-Yenching Institute, & is currently a Fulbright and BBRG Scholar at U.C. Berkeley.  She specializes in critical communication theory, the political economy of communication, and gender studies.  Her major publications include Media and Gender Studies:  Theories and Cases (in Chinese), and Critical Studies in Communication & Society, co-edited with Vincent Mosco & Leslie R. Shade (in English).
