The Japanese program offers courses in the languages, literature, religion, history and culture of Japan. A four-year sequence provides a firm grounding in standard Japanese through practice in conversation and the reading of expository and literary texts. Classical and medieval Japanese are also taught. Courses covering the history of Japanese literature, religion and culture to the present are conducted on the basis of translated material and take account of the climate of thought and opinion affecting the content of texts. Several other courses focus on cultural and social themes in modern and contemporary society. In short, the Japanese program teaches language as a medium of practical communication as well as literary creativity, while treating both language and literature within their cultural, political and social context. The program provides a solid foundation for the study of Japan both past and present.

The Japanese program supports two majors: one in Japanese language and literature and one in Asian Studies. The major in Japanese requires the study of the language to an advanced level together with literature and history, and encourages familiarization with the society. The major in Asian Studies requires an interdisciplinary approach to Japan, China, or Korea. This major is intended for students with a general interest in the country, and thus complements the major in Japanese by providing an alternative that demands less specialization.

Either of these two majors constitutes a unique preparation for academic and professional careers with international relevance. Moreover, in combination with a major in one of the social sciences or humanities, they add a dimension of expertise that is especially appropriate to current international trends. Since language is basic to this expertise, the student is advised to begin language study as early as possible and make every effort to pursue it without interruption throughout the college years. A year of intensive language training is especially effective after completing the lower division, and in this connection it is worth keeping in mind that selected students can avail themselves of an opportunity to study and practice the language for a year in Japan through the Education Abroad Program.
