Chikako Shinagawa specializes in Japanese linguistics and language pedagogy.
She started her career as an English as a second language teacher and served as a trainer for new ESL teachers. Before coming to UCSB, she taught Japanese at the University of California, Irvine and Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. She has also conducted several workshops throughout the US related to promote networking among fellow Japanese teachers. Her current work is on developing supplementary materials for the Genki textbooks co-authored by her and developing a genki-online site to support teachers and students who use the Genki textbooks. She currently teaches first and second year Japanese courses and also a conversational Japanese course.
