MODERN EAST ASIAN CULTURAL STUDIES

Modern East Asian Cultural Studies is based on an inclusive concept of culture that integrates the study of mentalities, ideologies, symbols and rituals, knowledge systems, the popular and the high-brow. We draw from a variety of theories such as gender theory, post/modernism, and post/colonialism which are often used in concert with one another to reveal the hybridity of modern culture.  Our research and pedagogical philosophy employs multiple critical approaches to the analysis of cultural texts, phenomena, and mediums. These include, but are not limited to literature, film, historical documents, documentary, photography, music, and mass media. Through our interdisciplinary approach we demonstrate the key role that culture plays, alongside politics and economics in relations of power.
