When to Apply:

Although most students enter in the fall, students may also be admitted for winter and spring quarters on a exception basis (fellowships, however, are not available at those times). Application materials are due in the East Asian Department by April 1. Incoming students who wish to be considered for fellowships must have their applications completed and submitted to the department by December 15.

Admission Requirements:

Students will be admitted directly into the emphasis, which is administered by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies. Applicants are expected to have two years of language training, or their equivalent, in one East Asian language prior to admission. Students with less background may be admitted at the discretion of the program. All students must take the GRE, and students whose native language is not English must take TOEFL.
