Opportunities for Overseas Language Study

Graduate students may apply to study or pursue research at most EAP-affiliated host institutions, and may participate in the short-term language programs. At many locations graduate students may arrange to study for less than a full year. Graduates must meet EAP minimum requirements, have completed at least one year of graduate work, and have the support of their academic department and graduate dean. For more information on admission go to eap.ucop.edu/common/Forms/Grad_admissioninfo.pdf.

Our FLAS award students also have 3 different opportunities for study abroad. (1) A full year study abroad program (2) Dissertation research abroad and (3) A formal program of intensive language study abroad during the summer. All options must have prior approval at least 30 days in advance of program start date. The summer FLAS awardees can also apply for travel awards to off set the flight costs of overseas travel. For more information on the FLAS fellowship program go to www.ed.gov/programs/iegpsflasf/index.html For more information on how to apply and deadlines for this year's summer FLAS fellowship (2004) sponsored by the East Asian Languages department please contact our office at (805)893-4549 or email info@eastasian.ucsb.edu.

Our 5 year BA/MA program requires students to travel abroad for their third year of study on a University sponsored EAP program to China, Taiwan, or Japan. During this time abroad the BA/MA student applies for admission to our graduate studies program and may also take the GRE abroad. The University sponsored EAP programs for undergraduates can be found at www.eap.ucsb.edu. For more about the 5 year BA/MA program click here.
