Class Requirements
(Please Note: All information on this page is current as of Fall 2006. This class is not
scheduled to be offered during Fall 2007. It may be offered at a later
date, at which time all information on this page is subject to change.)
Lectures and Discussions
- The lectures are the most important part of this course. Please
plan to attend all classes, because the slides we will view in class
are an essential supplement to the lectures.
- In the discussion sessions, you will be asked to summarize that
week's reading and be prepared to answer questions from your fellow
students.
Special Events
- All students must attend the performance of at least one of the three
parts of the Chinese opera "The Peony Pavilion," on October 6, 7, or 8
at the Lobero Theater downtown.
Reading
- The only book you need to purchase for this class is The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure
Class by Dean MacCannell, available at the UCSB bookstore.
- All other reading material is available through the UCSB Library's Electronic
Reserves. On the ERes home page, start by clicking "Search
Electronic Reserves" and searching for this class by course number
(30). You will then be asked for a password, which will be given
out during lecture on the first day of class.
- You will also occasionally be asked to read articles on other
websites.
- Click here to view the week-by-week
list of required reading.
Tests
- There will be a midterm exam, a final exam, and occasional pop
quizzes. These will include identifications and descriptions of
sites and names covered in class, analytical essays, and location of
sites on maps.
Short In-Class Presentation
- About midway through the quarter, you will be asked to give a short
presentation (5-6 minutes) on an aspect of Asian culture
that has crossed over to the United States, and that interests you.
Detailed requirements for this presentation are on this page.
Final Paper and Presentation
- Your final paper for this class will be ten pages long,
excluding bibliography, maps, and illustrations, and will consist of
your own analysis of a major tourist site in East Asia.
- You will also be required to give a presentation on that same tourist
site. This presentation should be 10-15 minutes long.
- Detailed requirements for the final paper and presentation are on
this page.
