| The
Pearl River Delta, where the Pearl River meets the ocean, is one of
China's leading economic regions. There was a great deal of
investment in this area after the Chinese economy was reformed and
opened in the early 1980s, and today it is a major center for
manufacturing and international trade. Many domestic tourists
come to this region to visit Cuiheng Village in the city of Zhongshan.
It is the hometown of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of
democracy in China. Reading Connection The Pearl River Delta region was the destination of the In Search of Roots Program, a group of Chinese Americans who visited China around 1990 to see their ancestral villages. The program is one of two discussed in the article "When You Are Related to the "Other": (Re)locating the Chinese Homeland in Asian American Politics through Cultural Tourism" by Andrea Louie.
