Tourism in East Asia

Lhasa

Lhasa is the capital city of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.  It has been the political capital of Tibet since the 17th century, when the fifth Dalai Lama made Lhasa the center of his administration and started building the Potala Palace there.  It was used as a winter palace for the Dalai Lama from that time until 1959.  It is a site of great historical importance to Tibetan Buddhism, and it is now a national museum.  The palace has been a World Heritage Site since 1994.
The Potala Palace is the most popular tourist attraction in the city, which has a thriving tourism industry.  Visitors also come here to see the beautiful surrounding landscape of the Himalayan mountains.
