Tourism in East Asia

Chengde, China

Approximately 100 miles northeast of Peking, Chengde is best known for its Mountain Resort.  The resort is a vast, walled-in area filled with palaces, other buildings, lakes, and beautifully landscaped gardens.  It was built in the 18th century by early Qing dynasty emperors, who lived there several months out of every year to escape the heat of summers in Peking.  The entire complex has been a World Heritage Site since 1994.
